Your timers

Keep this page open. Your screen stays on while a timer runs, where the phone allows it.

How long do I boil an egg?

For a large egg from the fridge lowered into boiling water: 6 minutes for a runny yolk, 7 for jammy, 8–9 for medium and 11 for hard-boiled.

Can I run several timers at once?

Yes. Each timer has its own name, countdown, pause button and alarm, so you can time pasta, sauce and the oven together.

Will the alarm ring if I lock my phone?

Phones may pause web pages when locked. Keep the page open on screen; the countdown stays accurate and catches up as soon as you return.

Scale

Recipe Scaler

Paste an ingredient list, set the servings, and every quantity is rescaled, including fractions like 1 ½ and ¾.

Multiplier
×1.5

How do I scale eggs?

Round to the nearest whole egg. For half an egg, beat one egg and use about 25 g of it.

Do baking times change?

Larger batches in a bigger pan usually need extra time. If you split into more pans of the same size, the time stays the same.

Should I scale salt and spices exactly?

Scale them, then taste. Strong spices and leaveners can feel stronger in very large batches, so start at about 90% when tripling.

Cups to Grams, by Ingredient

A cup of flour and a cup of sugar weigh very different amounts. Pick the ingredient to get an accurate weight.

Weight
120g

US cup = 236.6 ml. Flour measured by spooning into the cup and levelling.

How many grams is 1 cup of flour?

About 120 g for all-purpose flour that is spooned and levelled. Scooping straight from the bag can pack in 140 g or more.

How many grams is 1 cup of sugar?

Granulated sugar is about 200 g per cup. Packed brown sugar is heavier, around 213 g.

Why weigh instead of using cups?

A scale removes the guesswork. Bakers weigh because a 15% swing in flour changes texture noticeably.

    Bake

    Sourdough & Baker's Percentage

Every ingredient is a percentage of the flour weight. Set your flour and hydration and get exact grams for water, starter and salt.

    Total dough
    975g

What hydration should a beginner use?

Start around 68–72%. The dough is easier to shape, and you can raise it a few points once you are comfortable.

Does the starter count toward hydration?

Yes. The starter adds both flour and water. The "true hydration" line shows the figure including the starter.

How much salt goes in bread?

Most recipes use 1.8–2.2% of the flour weight. 2% is a safe default.

      Brew

      Coffee to Water Ratio

Choose a brew method, then type either the coffee or the water. The other number updates.

      You need
      22g coffee

What is the golden coffee ratio?

Around 1:16 to 1:17 for filter coffee. Go lower (1:15) for stronger, higher (1:18) for lighter.

How many grams of coffee per cup?

For a 250 ml mug at 1:16, use about 15–16 g, roughly 2 level tablespoons of whole beans.

        Why is espresso 1:2?

For espresso the ratio compares dry coffee to the liquid in the cup, so 18 g in gives about 36 g out.

        Baking Pan Size Converter

Your recipe calls for a 9-inch round but you have a square pan? Compare pan areas and get the amount to multiply the recipe by.

        Multiply the recipe by
        ×1.00

Can I bake a 9×13 recipe in two 8-inch rounds?

Nearly. A 9×13 is 117 in² and two 8-inch rounds are 100 in², so fill the rounds and bake any extra batter as cupcakes.

Does bake time change with pan size?

If the batter depth stays the same, the time is similar. Deeper batter needs more time and sometimes a 10–15 °C lower oven.

Are 8-inch square and 9-inch round the same?

Almost: 64 in² versus 63.6 in². You can swap them freely.

          Heat

          Oven Temperature Converter

Convert between Fahrenheit, Celsius and gas mark, and adjust for fan or convection ovens.

          Conventional oven
          177°C

What is 350 °F in Celsius?

            350 °F is 177 °C, usually rounded to 180 °C, which is gas mark 4.

How much lower for a fan oven?

Reduce by about 20 °C (25 °F). Some newer ovens adjust automatically, so check the manual.

            Why do recipes round temperatures?

Most oven dials work in 10 °C or 25 °F steps, and home ovens drift by more than that anyway.
